Learn the Inner Smile Medical Qigong Practice
Have you ever stopped to noticed if you are smiling or frowning? Some say smiling is the secret to health and serenity; sound strange? The ancient Taoist practice of the Inner Smile shows that when we smile, even the body smiles back.
An Inner Smile warms and calms like a relaxing cocktail making us receptive to healthy thoughts. Conversely, a frown can suppress our immune system by increasing stress and stress related hormones. Research in France indicates that facial muscles used to convey emotion trigger specific brain neurotransmitters. Smiling activates the secretion of healing hormones such as healing endorphins and immune boosting T-cells.
Smile therapy has been shown to lower the stress hormones cortisol, adrenalin and noradrenaline. It can produce hormones which stabilize blood pressure, relax muscles, improve respiration, reduce pain, accelerate healing and stabilize the mood. Stress hormones may increase blood pressure, weaken the immune system, increase susceptibility to infections, and exacerbate depression and anxiety.
Though a heart-felt smile has a more profound effect, even a small, gentle smile can trick the brain into releasing healthy hormones. This is because each time we smile we reinforce happy neural pathways that fire more spontaneously with each use. Smiling circuits then release healing chemicals whereas self-sabotaging messages release poisons that breed disease.
Try a smile for a minute. Relax and let a subtle smile spread from your eyes to your lips. Think of something or someone that always makes you smile. Now frown and feel for the emotional and energetic shift. Can you feel the difference? It takes 26 muscles to smile and 62 muscles to frown, so why work so hard to wear a scowl?
Experiment and share a smile with those around you. Smiling faces tend to grow smiles in others. If people wear an unhappy expression the same principal applies. Don’t underestimate the power of a smile.

Over 5000 years ago, Taoists discovered the relationships between emotional energies and organ systems through many centuries of study and organic meditation. They developed methods to transform negative emotional energy to positive Chi (Qi). What we know today is that we manifest from thought to physical reality with expediency and cannot afford to harbor negative thoughts for long without seeing them manifest in our lives. The same is true for harboring loving, light, compassionate thoughts. This, too, manifests quite noticeably in our daily lives. We must have emotional balance in order to make healthy choices in all areas of our life.
"Inner Smile" and "Six Healing Sounds" exercises focus on five organs or organ systems: the heart, the lungs, the kidneys, the liver/gall bladder, and the stomach/spleen.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is considered an alternative medicine in much of the Western world. TCM includes treatments such as Chinese herbal medicine, Qigong, Thai massage, Tai Chi, meditation techniques, acupuncture, organic 5 Element Cooking, and both Tui na and Shiatsu massage.
